Simon To America: Sarcasm Was Not Directed at Virginia Tech
On the results show last night, Simon Cowell addressed the furor that had arisen over the sarcastic eye-roll he gave Chris Richardson after Chris had expressed sympathy towards the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.
After arguing with Simon about now "nasally is a type of singing", Richardson went on to say "My hearts and prayers go out to Virginia Tech. I have a lot of friends over there. ... Be strong."
The camera then cut to a shot of Simon rolling his eyes and tapping impatiently on the table. This led to the furor, with several commentaries written and videos posted all over the web in outrage during the hours following the show.
"I didn't hear what Chris was saying," Simon said. "I may not be the nicest person in the world, but I would never, ever, ever disrespect those families or those victims. And I felt it was important to set the record straight."
Fox showed the entire sequence, showing Simon the entire time, next to the feed that American saw where it cut back and forth from the judges to the stage. It seems pretty clear that Simon stopped paying attention to Chris before he made the comments regarding Virginia Tech, and instead was arguing with Paula.
Below is a video of the side by side camera angles, which seem to show that Simon was in fact not being disrespectful (at least not any more than usual).
